Daniel Welch


Daniel Lee Welch was a 1961 graduate of Pennridge High School in Perkasie, Pennsylvania, where he was a National Merit Scholar, and a 1965 graduate of Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, with a bachelor's degree in English. While at Wheaton, he participated in the ROTC program, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army on graduating. He served in Vietnam as part of the 101st Airborne Division, a light infantry division known as the "Screaming Eagles." Lt. Welch was wounded in Vietnam in 1968 and spent several months at a hospital in Japan. Mr. Welch spent his career as an English and history teacher, mostly at private schools in the Philadelphia and Wilmington area. He was a founding member of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Mill Creek in Newark. Mr. Welch and his wife Carol volunteered at the Brandywine Zoo, the Delaware Natural History Museum curatorial department, and the Delaware Center for Horticulture. Mr. Welch sang tenor with various theatrical groups, where he met his wife, Carol. He maintained a lifelong interest in poetry and history, particularly military history. He developed courses on military literature and the Bible as literature. He coached sports and was the faculty advisor on school plays. Daniel Welch died in Wilmington, DE on May 14, 2012, at age 69.
