Rachel Beith was born the fifth of six children in Largs, Ayrshire, Scotland on August 17, 1844, the daughter of William (1818-1901) and Mary A. Beith (1821-1905). She graduated from Wheaton College in 1864, marrying Warren F. Day, class of 1863, later in the year on October 4, 1864 in Elburn, Illinois.
