Robert Loveless

Robert Loveless graduated from Wheaton College in 1944, a member of the baritone section of Men's Glee Club, as well as trumpeter in Brass Quartet. During his freshman year he composed the tune and score for the Wheaton Fight Song. Before his enlistment in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943, he collaborated a book on choruses with his father titled "Radio Songs and Choruses No. 3." In 1944 Loveless married Phyllis Harstick, an education major from Beloit, Wisconsin. After living in Texas for a while, he returned to Wheaton to earn his MA in 1948. That year, he moved his family to Oahu to lead the Kaimuki bible Training Institute, later to become the Kaimuki Evangelical Church. He served in the pulpit for ten years, and then as an organist until 1989. In 1958 he founded Honolulu Christian College as its president. His wife, Phyllis died of cancer in 1977. A year later he married Barbara Luckner, who worked at the University of Hawaii. Throughout his time in Honolulu, he served on the State board of Education, as a music critic covering the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra, and in Mayor Frank Fasi's cabinet as Director of Model Cities. Loveless died in Honolulu at the age of 87 on March 30, 2009.
