Ice Cream Socialist

The Ice Cream Socialist was an alternative underground student publication that sought to address issues of "phoniness" at Wheaton College. This publication, one in a long line of similar outlets for student speech, began in the fall semester 1989. The publication was halted in May 1990 with disciplinary action against nine students. As the New York Times reported, "The right to free speech clashed with Christian ideals of ''responsible freedom'' at Wheaton College" (May 20, 1990). Students and faculty rallied around the suspended, or expelled, students. Protests regarding freedom of speech occupied the steps of the Memorial Student Center as well as on the pages of local newspapers and television screens.
