USS Lloyd

USS Lloyd was a Buckley-class destroyer escort of the United States Navy and was named in honor of Ensign William Rees Lloyd (1916–1942), who was killed in action while serving aboard the USS Oahu on 6 May 1942 during the Battle of Corregidor. Lloyd was a 1939 graduate of Wheaton College. The USS Lloyd was launched November 23, 1943 at the Navy yard, Charleston, South Carolina. After years of service in the Pacific theater the Lloyd was decommissioned July 1, 1946 in Green Cove Springs, Florida. It was recommissioned in 1951 for service in the Korean conflict. Afterward it served in the Caribbean and was decommissioned, again, in 1958, joining the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. The USS Lloyd was sold for scrap in June 1966.

William Rees Lloyd was born September 23, 1916 in Monticello, Florida and enlisted in the Navy October 9, 1940. He was appointed midshipman that December and was commissioned ensign March 14, 1941. He served aboard the Luzon and then reported to Oahu September 26, 1941. He was killed in action May 6, 1942 when Oahu was sunk at Corregidor at the close of a long and gallant defense.
