James Arthur Clark, a 1953 graduate of Wheaton College, originally came to college to study science, recalled his wife, Hazel. "The Great Revival of 1950 turnedhis heart toward missions and he majored to Bible." While on campus heplayed trumpet in the Concert Band, Marching Band and Pep Band, was on TheRecord staff for three years, served as treasurer of Knights lit societyand was elected to the National Honor Society. Clark went on to earn an MDiv atGordon-Conwell Seminary. Jim and Hazel first met in language schoolseveral years later in San Jose, Costa Rica and marriedin 1961. Jim and his wife, Hazel (Winne '56) were church-plantingmissionaries under the Conservative Baptist Home Missions Society (CBHMS) in Central and South America – 17 1/2 years in Honduras andthen El Salvador and Venezuela. Jim's father was the founding president ofthe CBHMS while a pastor of the Galilee Baptist Church in Chicago. Uponreturn from the field in 1985 the Clarks introduced churches in Knoxville,TN to the outreach ministry of International Students and trained churchvolunteers. They also spent eight months ministering in Albania. The Clarks had a son, Peter '84, and two daughters, Rachel and Esther. Clark died on May 29, 2010 inSebring, FL. |
