Rufus L. Park was born in Tonica, Illinois June 2, 1862, the son of John and Martha Ide Park. Rufus had a twin brother Linus. He was an 1899 graduate of Wheaton College. He worked as a school teacher for forty-two years, most of them in the Chicago Public School system. He retired in November 1932. He married Sarah Potter and together they had five children, John, Arthur, Mary, Martha and Ruth. Darien Straw believed Park was the most versatile man he knew. According to Straw, "he was skilled in wood carving, cabinet work, and tooling. He made his own harp and cello." (Alumni News, July-August 1934). Park died May 9, 1934.
