Hiatt was born in Henry County, Indiana on August 2, 1844 and moved to Wheaton in 1859 where he enrolled in Wheaton College. While in school, in 1862 he enlisted in Company F of the 105th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out in 1865. He was appointed a trustee of the Insane Asylum by Governor Fifer. He died accidentally of drowning while at Powers Lake on October 5, 1895. He had been active in Republican politics for over twenty years.
