J. Kittredge Wheeler was born in St. Charles, Illinois in 1849. He graduated from Wheaton College in 1873. After graduation he served as a common school principal in Marengo, Illinois for two years and in Austin for another. He graduated from the Baptist Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1879. He held pastorates in Marengo, Terre Haute, Indiana, Hartford, Connecticut (South Baptist Church, 1885-1893), and in Chicago at the Fourth Baptist Church.
