Carle Stenmark graduated from Wheaton College (Illinois) in 1948 with a business & economics degree and began his career as a fifth-grade teacher at Carson Elementary in Denver, Colorado. Stenmark served on the board of directors of Rocky Mountain Public Broadcasting. He was also an active member of the Denver Rotary Club and served in the Navy in World War II. He worked as a a Denver Public Schools administrator for more than 30 years and helped create an integration plan for Denver schools and settled a teachers strike. Stenmark balanced both projects-the 1969 teachers strike and the 1970 court-ordered desegregation effort-in his work to create plans that would most benefit the school system and students. He was acting superintendent of the school system from 1984 to 1985. He died June 26, 2012 at age 88 and is survived by his son, Kurt Stenmark, and his daughter, Suzanne White, along with six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. |
